One recognized scientist once said that researchers in liberal arts seem all to have set their minds on communicating as obscurely as possible.
Successful writers understand the value of clear English. Nevertheless, experienced academics in the humanities see clear expressions as dangerous, so they prefer incoherent writing replete with inappropriate language. Those who want their writing style to be similar should consider the following simple tips.
How to write titles?
Some years ago, scholars were convinced the titles had to be brief and informative. Modern scientists are not fooled so easily. Come up with the title, which is as vague as you can imagine. Unintelligible phrases like “Overarching Geography” or “Uninterrupted Modernity” will make a perfect title for a clearly written article. This approach works well because if the readers do not understand something, they will call it original, smart, modern, new, and so on. It’s also a good idea to use an obscure quote as a title. And what can be better than grammar mistakes or antiquated words in your title?
Language is just an instrument. Use it and change it however you want. Why not change adjectives into nouns and vice versa if you want it? Look how wonderful the following words are: hyperconstructivism, intercontinentality, overhorizontality, and postcoloniality. Can you invent 30 new concepts? Can you use them in your articles?
Use scare quotes.
It is virtually impossible to write a successful text without scare quotes. Use them as often as possible in your writing. “European” and “pro-European” traditions, “false” identities, and “conventional” medicine. An approach cannot be modern, only “modern.” Besides, scare quotes secure you from being accused of philosophical immaturity.
Verbs, verbs, and verbs.
Simply using verbs in a sentence is nowadays not enough. Use a verb in its active form followed by the same verb in passive. For example, “I will analyze these two emerging personalities as they influence and are influenced by each other” or “Scientists have discovered that the ideology evolves as it constitutes and is constituted by reforms.
Repeating and re-repeating the same verbs with a re-prefix is one more trend. Your goal is to target and re-target, describe and re-describe, discover and re-discover. This demonstrates and re-demonstrates to your readers that you understand revisionism.
Important as style can be, it cannot compensate for poor content. Only a great scientist is capable of finding an agency among the downtrodden. The people of southern countries did not simply adopt Western traditions, they adapted them. Islamic women did not join global feminist movement because when feminism was invented, they had already been feminists.
Make things complicated.
In a nutshell, you have to make simple ideas complicated. One scholar once said that “coexistence destroys unified self by synchronizing logical serenity and dramatic pathos while eliminating the possibility of synchronous time.” If only more people knew this rule, so much anguish could be avoided.
