Everybody gets the same 24 hours a day, but not everyone is able to become successful using that limited amount time. What differentiates those who are living lives of their dreams and those who struggle all the time without getting any satisfaction from life? It’s the habits. And knowing that it’s habits you can do a lot to improve yourself and develop the habits that will change your life. Develop these seven skills and you will start noticing how your life gets better.
If you end your day wondering where the time went, then you probably unconscious about the amount of time that you’re wasting. People who wonder where the time has gone, often don’t realize how big the difference is between how you believe you’re spending your day and how you actually spend it. In order to realize this difference, you should perform time audit – use a timer every 30 minutes and when it rings write down what you’re doing. Look at what you’ve been doing at the end of the day. If you notice that you’re spending too much time on social networks or checking your e-mail, or chatting with your friends, you will know what your number one enemy is.
Block out distractions.
In order to be productive, you must create an environment that will help you to be productive. If social media is your problem – use software that blocks it. If you’re writing something using your PC, log off your messengers and browsers in order prevent answering to messages and notifications. Setting your smartphone in a flight mode is a great thing to do if you want to stay focused and think about something.
If you’re afraid that you won’t able to do all these tasks this week, do some scheduling. Set aside hours for working, taking rest, answering emails, researching, reflecting and doing things that you have planned doing for months but never had the time to. If you have a very important task that shouldn’t be interrupted – ask your colleagues and friends not to interrupt you during the period of time when you’re working on it. If you haven’t tried it, you will be surprised, because blocking time does miracles with productivity.
Keep in mind that “multitasking is a good thing” is a myth that should be erased and forgotten. What actually happens when you perform several tasks at once is that you don’t focus on any of them seriously and end up spending more time than you would, if you were completing them separately. Giving your full attention to just one thing you automatically perform better. What you can do though is to group similar tasks together and complete them one by one.
You shouldn’t agree to spend time on things that are of no value to you. Invited to visit a meeting that’s of no relevance to you? Say “No, thank you!” That’s all. Teach others to respect your time, because if you don’t respect it, how can you expect others to do it? Also, don’t forget to take proper rest, otherwise all time management tips won’t help you!
